FAMILIES

All families have an unconscious organization made up of patterns and unspoken rules that have been molded over generations. As our ancestors learned how to survive the stresses of their upbringing, environment and culture, so these strategies of surviving and relating are passed down through time. These patterns, though familiar and predictable, can often create discord and distress, or show up in the extreme behavior of one family member, usually a child, the identified patient. Additionally, blended families or families with adopted or foster children can experience new challenges as their inter-generational patterns intermingle.

In order to uncover dysfunctional family patterns and re-shape them into healthier relationships, families sometimes need external support and guidance. Therapy can offer families a safe space to dismantle old ways of relating and reorganize themselves into a healthier, more flexible, loving structure. This can sometimes be hard and scary work, but the rewards are great, as old patterns which no longer serve your family are sloughed off, allowing for new, more rewarding ways of relating to flourish.
